as flames to frost

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
And yet, ’tis beauty’s flower;
To love through every hour.
Then leaf gives birth to leaf
And hearts no longer grieve,
For this dawn e’er remains:
One thing gold will stay.

-Charles Baldon, January 1994

I wrote this as a response to Frost’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay.”
